Packaging

Your seafood will arrive neatly packaged in a corrugated box with a thermal-insulated liner. We utilize food-safe, frozen gel packs or dry ice to keep your seafood cool. You can reuse your frozen gel packets, and the dry ice will evaporate.

Frozen products are shipped on dry ice. Shipments containing dry ice will remain frozen in transit and arrive frozen. Fresh and live (non-frozen) goods are shipped individually, with frozen gel packs. The frozen gel packs help to keep your seafood cool and fresh.

The food itself comes in a variety of packing types, depending on the item(s) in your purchase. This information can be found on the product pages. The plastic film that protects the seafood is FDA and USDA approved, as well as BPA-free. If the packing is punctured or broken during transit, you can safely repack it and store it in the refrigerator or freezer.

Yes! We are constantly looking for the most sustainable solutions that will give you with high-quality seafood.

The cotton lining is biodegradable. Simply remove the plastic wrapping around the cotton liner, recycle the plastic, and discard the cotton liner. Because it is biodegradable, it will decay naturally rather than filling up landfills. The complete liner can be recycled as #4 plastic in-store at any location that accepts home textiles.

Cotton is 100% postindustrial, with no postconsumer component. This is significant since post-consumer cotton is not biodegradable due to its high synthetic content.
Here is some more information about how to recycle the liner.
If you'd like to reuse the product, here are some great ideas on how to do so

The gel packs are food-safe, non-toxic, and may be repeatedly frozen and reused. They can also be opened and used to water houseplants. The plastic should then be thrown away. We are working on finding a recyclable film.

If your item is shipped with dry ice, please avoid touching it with your bare hands, as this can cause serious cold burns and frostbite. Instead, use thick gloves or tongs to remove the ice and allow it to melt outside or in a well-ventilated room. Keep it away from kids and pets. Do not put dry ice in tightly sealed containers or down the drain.

Freshly frozen and live/fresh products (not frozen) are shipped in different boxes.

Frozen products are shipped on dry ice. Shipments containing dry ice will remain frozen in transit and arrive frozen.

Live and fresh goods (not frozen) are shipped with frozen gel packs. The frozen gel packs help to keep your seafood cool and fresh.

The dry ice/gel packs are stored in a corrugated box with an insulated lining. The liner keeps the cold air inside and the warm air outside. The liner, dry ice/gel packs, and box have been created and tested to keep your seafood at the proper temperature.

Storage & Handling

CAUTION: Dry Ice Can Burn You

Dry ice (aka frozen carbon dioxide) is used to keep your frozen order frozen in transit. However, please be careful. Do NOT touch dry ice with bare hands because contact could cause severe cold burns and frostbite. Instead, use thick gloves or tongs to remove the ice and let it evaporate outside or in a well-ventilated area. Keep it away from children and pets. Do not put dry ice in tightly closed containers or down a drain.

If you do not see any dry ice remaining, then it has evaporated, but that doesn't necessarily mean your shipment is unsafe. Check if your seafood is still cold to the touch, and contact us if you feel that your shipment did not arrive in good condition.

Once your FultonFishMarket.com box arrives, open it and inspect your seafood. Then, follow our seafood storage and handling instructions to properly store your seafood.

Each product page has a freshness guarantee, which is available under the "More Info" section. You can also refer to our fish Storage, Handling, and Freezing Instructions for basic information on how long items last and how to freeze fish.

Yes! Items that come fresh (as stated on the product pages) have never been frozen and can be stored in the original packaging. If you intend to freeze any of the products in your order, we recommend that you do so as soon as you receive them. Learn the best ways to freeze shellfish and how to securely freeze and defrost fish by reading our guides.

However, we believe it is better to order from our already frozen collection. We only choose the highest quality items and freeze them at peak freshness using industry-leading equipment, resulting in a consistently better experience than freezing products at home. Most customers choose this.

Food Safety

Yes, although it depends, and there are a handful of food safety and quality factors to bear in mind. In general, we do not advocate re-freezing seafood owing to the impact on quality and texture. For more information, see our guide to safely freezing and thawing fish.

Before making any decisions, it is best to consult with your doctor. Here is information on our process to help you make an informed decision.

We process shellfish (both crustaceans and mollusks) in our facility. We process our shellfish in a separate room and with separate equipment than what is used for our finfish. Once the shellfish and finfish are packed, they are located in the same room for order packing and shipping.

Not only is seafood one of the healthiest foods you can eat, but it is also one of the least likely to cause foodborne disease in the United States, according to the CDC. There are various explanations for this.

We are dedicated about ensuring that our seafood is safe for you and your family to consume. We use our own procedures, keep precise records, and cheerfully comply with various rules to ensure you have a wonderful experience!

We comply with and follow the guidance of regulatory bodies such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the New York State Department of Agriculture, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), and various state and federal agencies that manage seafood caught in their waters.

Furthermore, we only buy the highest-quality seafood and meticulously inspect all of it before it is chopped, packed, and sent, and we work closely with suppliers to ensure they follow suit. For additional information on how we pack and send your order, see the "Packaging" section of our FAQs. For your convenience, we have prepared seafood storage and handling instructions.

If you are interested in learning more, here are some helpful resources:

The FDA cautions against consuming seafood raw, as it can harbor parasites, bacteria, and viruses that could potentially make consumers sick. To be on the safe side, all seafood should be cooked to an internal temperature of 145°F.

Here are some considerations when choosing seafood for raw consumption:

  • It's best to focus on saltwater (marine) fish since many freshwater fish are susceptible to tapeworms.
  • You can read more about full FDA guidance on raw seafood consumption. According to the FDA, super-freezing seafood in a commercial sub-zero storage freezer helps ensure parasites are destroyed (however, it cannot guarantee it), and that is required for many species of seafood to be consumed raw. In fact, seafood at sushi restaurants is typically super-frozen for this reason.
  • Buy your seafood from a trusted source, such as Fulton Fish Market. All of our seafood is chef-selected for quality and freshness, and it is found in many top sushi restaurants. However, it is not all suitable or preferable to be consumed raw. Some of our freshly frozen (super-frozen) products that are popular in sushi dishes include farmed salmon, ahi tuna, and red snapper.

Additional information on shellfish:

  • Our live oysters, live clams, and uni are often consumed raw.
  • Learn about some of the risks.
  • If you freeze your oysters and clams, they are no longer live and should always be cooked before consumption.
